Prized Possessions: Dutch 17th Century Art in National Trust Houses
by Jane Choy-Thurlow
This talk is about two of Jane’sfavourite things: English Country Houses and Dutch 17th century art. English country houses have traditionally been the home to Dutch Golden Age masters including impressive works by some of the best loved artists. The British have a fondness for collecting Dutch pictures with examples collected by some of the Nation’s most important patrons and displayed in some of Britain’s greatest houses. The National Trust has over 13,000 works of art, of these over 1,000 are Dutch 17th century paintings. Dutch masters such as Rembrandt, Aelbert Cuyp, and Meindert Hobbema were extremely popular with the British nobility and entrepreneurs from the 17th to the 20th century. Some of the most beautiful examples of these artists are to be found in these houses. The talk will include the variety of paintings to be found, the artists who painted them and how they came to be in these houses
