Embarking on a journey into the captivating world of theatre, Tyler, guided by his thespian roots—his parents, the illustrious Peter Butterworth and Janet Brown—entered the limelight at a tender age. By four, he was already gracing commercials and sharing the screen with icons like Diana Rigg and the dynamic duo, Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise.

As the curtains of his Drama School fell, Tyler found himself in the capable hands of stage agent Marina Martin, who swiftly whisked him into the realm of auditions. The Dundee Playhouse beckoned, offering Tyler a script and a mere two weeks to prepare for the unfolding adventure.

Picture a Monday morning at 10:00, where Tyler joined the cast for a script ‘read-through.’ A model of the proposed stage set, wheeled in on a trolley, set the stage—quite literally—for the weeks ahead. The clock ticking, four weeks of rehearsals unfolded. Ordinary clothes replaced costumes, and the stage layout was merely suggested by sticky tape on the room floor.

Here, Tyler unveiled the quirks of stage life—demanding to ‘bring the house down’ and bestowing the wish to ‘break a leg.’ Props occasionally rebelled; doorbells refused to chime, guns stayed eerily silent when fired. Forgetful actors stumbled through their lines, adding an element of unpredictability. Plays embraced everything from nudity to intimacy, with ‘coordinators’ ensuring a seamless execution of bed scenes.

The third week brought the ‘stagger through,’ a continuous run-through of the script in ordinary clothes, acting as a precursor to the introduction of the actual set in the fourth week. Lighting, sound, direction, costumes—all intricately woven into the twelve-hour tapestry of preparation.

As the much-anticipated first night approached, nerves ran high. The entire cast exchanged small presents, a ritual of camaraderie before the tense moments backstage. Five minutes prior to curtain-up, actors meticulously checked props, bodies, and voices. The audience hushed, the stage lights ignited—the real performance began.

Curtains fell, and relief washed over the actors like a wave. Hugs, kisses, and congratulations filled the air, apologies offered to those once cursed in rehearsals. Costumes shed, the stage door beckoned, leading the troupe to their chosen pub for a well-deserved supper. Yet, Tyler revealed the unspoken truth—once the applause fades, thoughts inevitably drift toward the next play.

This insightful journey into the heart of theatre was part of a guest lecture organised by the Arts Society de la Frontera in October 2023. In his parting words, Tyler emphasised a fundamental truth: the allure of theatre lies not in the pursuit of fame but in the sheer joy of acting. It’s a sentiment that resonates with the essence of every performance—a passion-driven journey that transcends the applause and propels actors toward the beckoning stage lights of the next theatrical endeavour.
